• Some of the state’s best whitewater rafting takes place on the Tygart River and other rivers in the region. Skiing enthusiasts will find excellent slopes at Canaan Valley State Park and Snowshoe Resort Area, both less than a 90 minute drive from Philippi.

  • Its famed Covered Bridge, the only two-lane covered bridge in the federal highway system, leads into an attractive and progressive community of locally owned businesses, professional services, and safe residential areas.

  • Visitors can trace Philippi’s history and development at the Barbour County Historical Museum, Blue and Gray Park and the downtown historical district. Alderson Broaddus University, a Baptist-affiliated university deeply rooted in the liberal arts and health sciences, is located here as well.

  • Philippi is 20 minutes east of I-79. Twenty minutes to the south is Corridor H, and Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland are less than a two-hour drive away. In addition to the major highway connections to Philippi, the Philippi/Barbour County Regional Airport with its 3200 foot runway and dawn-to-dusk lights, connects the idyllic community to other areas.

  • The Barbour County Fairgrounds, eight miles south of Philippi, provides camping and picnicking facilities as well as being the site for the annual county fair. The Barbour County Fair is full of award-winning entertainers and entertainment for the family including a demolition derby, a lawn tractor pull, a car show, the queen’s pageant, 4-H livestock shows, and an annual parade.

  • Teter Lake, 11 miles south of the city limits, is a 35-acre trout impoundment, which is stocked periodically. Pleasant Creek Public Hunting and Fishing Area, just 10 miles north of Philippi, offers campsites, boating, rifle range, fishing and hunting. Audra State Park, 20 miles away, offers fishing, swimming, tent and trailer camping, and picnic areas. Nearby Tygart Lake State Park has picnicking and camping areas as well as boat docking and swimming, a lodge, and restaurant.
